DATA ANALYSIS ON POND WATER AND FISH QUALITY
Updated: Nov 22, 2018
TriMark Aquaculture Centre as part of its core mandate to ensure an effective operation and maintenance of the treatment plant and also the plant's ability to support fish growth has conducted several research on wastewater and fish quality in their production ponds.
Data on wastewater quality and fish growth were collected and analyzed every fortnight in the two maturation ponds which served as production ponds.
Wastewater parameters analyzed include pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen, conductivity, biological oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand as well as excreta related pathogens such as E. Coli, Total coli-forms, helminth eggs and Salmonella to assess the food safety of fish produced, sections of fish sampled such as the liver, skin and gut were analyzed for heavy metals such as Fe, Pb, Cu, Mn, Zn and the excreta related pathogens listed above.
It should however be noted that all samples were carefully analyzed in accordance with standard methods as prescribed by APHA, 2001.
