Report on TriMark Aquaculture Centre’s Participation in Sanitation Challenge for Ghana 2019

The sanitation challenge for Ghana (SC4GH) was launched in October, 2015 on World Toilet Day as part of the ideas to impact initiative. SC4GH was focused on Water, Sanitation and Health (WASH). The challenge sought to challenge Metropolitan, Municipal and District assemblies (MMDA’s) in Ghana to design and implement liquid waste management strategies in Ghana and also encourage partnership with private companies in addressing the liquid waste challenges in poor households in urban cities with population above 15,000 people.

The awards were classified into two main stages; Duapa Award (April 2016) and The Dignified City Awards (March 2019). At the end of the Duapa Awards; out of 21 finalist, 3 district assemblies received a total sum of 75, 000 GBP.The 21 MMDAs finalist at the Duapa stage were tasked to implement their winning strategies to meet the minimum requirement, out of 17 of them qualified for the Dignified City Award. The MMDA awards was sponsored by DFID-UK in partnership with the Government of Ghana-Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation, IMC-Worldwide; an international development consultancy agent which acts on behalf of the DFID-UK, Ideas to impact, IRC-Ghana.

For the private partners in collaboration with the MMDAs, 60 contestants applied at The Dignified City and out of which 14 made it to the final stage. The winners for The Dignified City Awards were announced on 24th July, 2019 and KMA won the 1st prize under Metropolitan and Municipal Assembly Award whilst TriMark Aquaculture Centre also won the 1st prize under the private partner category. The following indicates the winners and their respective prizes:
